Recent protests in Nigeria in the past and the forthcoming anticipated one next month, August, 2024 have sparked intense debates and divergent opinions, particularly among Muslim clerics. The core demands of these protests are good governance, economic reform, and an end to corruption. These calls for change have resonated deeply with the masses, who have long endured economic hardship and political mismanagement.

The Divide Among Clerics

The protests have revealed a stark divide among clerics, with some advocating for peaceful demonstrations as a legitimate means to express grievances and others condemning such actions as potentially destructive.

Supporters of Protests:

1. Peaceful Protests as a Right: Some clerics argue that peaceful protests are permissible and align with democratic principles. They emphasize that protests offer a non-violent way for citizens to express their dissatisfaction and demand accountability from their leaders.

2.  Addressing Youth Concerns: Proponents highlight the importance of allowing the youth to voice their frustrations. They argue that suppressing these protests without addressing the underlying issues only exacerbates the problem.

3. Call for Mediation: Some clerics call for a mediating role, advocating for dialogue between the government and protesters to find common ground and address the root causes of the discontent.

Opponents of Protests:

1.  Risk of Chaos: Opponents warn that protests can lead to chaos and destruction. They argue that the potential for violence and disruption outweighs the benefits of public demonstrations.

2. Historical Inefficacy: Some clerics believe that protests have not historically led to meaningful change and suggest alternative ways to address grievances.

3. Advising Against Participation: Others advise the youth against participating in protests, emphasizing the need to maintain peace and stability.

The Role of Protests in Driving Change

Despite the differing viewpoints, the protests highlight a critical issue: the need for effective governance and economic reform in Nigeria. The constitutional right to protest is a vital aspect of democratic engagement, and the government must address the legitimate grievances of the people rather than suppressing their voices.

Constitutional Rights and Government Responsibility:

- Expression of Grievances: Protests are a constitutional right and an essential mechanism for the public to express their dissatisfaction with the government. Suppressing these voices undermines democratic principles and can lead to further unrest.

-  Addressing Root Causes: The government must take concrete steps to address the root causes of the protests, including corruption, poor governance, and economic hardship. This requires transparency, accountability, and genuine efforts to implement reforms that benefit the masses.

Role of Clerics and Community Leaders:

- Mediation and Dialogue: Clerics and community leaders can play a crucial role in mediating be tween the government and protesters. By facilitating dialogue, they can help find peaceful resolutions and ensure that the concerns of the people are heard and addressed.

- Promoting Peaceful Engagement: It is important for clerics to promote peaceful engagement and discourage violence. Encouraging non-violent means of protest ensures that the demonstrations remain constructive and focused on achieving positive change.

Conclusion

The revolutionary actions against hardships faced by the masses in Nigeria underscore the urgent need for good governance and economic reform. The divide among clerics reflects broader societal tensions, but it also highlights the potential for dialogue and mediation. By addressing the grievances of the people and fostering a culture of peaceful protest, Nigeria can move towards a more just and equitable society. The role of clerics and community leaders is pivotal in this process, as they can guide and support the movement towards meaningful change.
