Beyond Akpabio: A Systemic Problem of Ingratitude in Nigerian Politics

The brazen ingratitude and self-serving machinations of Nigerian politicians are on full display, exemplified by the recent actions of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. His mocking dismissal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, coupled with his blatant disregard for the party that propelled his political career, reveals a disturbing pattern of political opportunism. This behavior, far from being exceptional, is tragically common within Nigeria's political landscape, where selfish ambition trumps any semblance of genuine service to the people. The cycle of corruption begins with the creation of political parties, the opportunistic switching between them, and the exploitation of government resources for personal gain. This conduct not only tarnishes Nigeria's image but also dramatically degrades the lives of its citizens. Akpabio's recent actions epitomize the toxic cycle of political dishonesty, and his utterances have profoundly damaged his credibility. He must acknowledge the pivotal role the PDP played in his ascension and cease the disrespectful and dismissive remarks that damage his leadership profile and negatively impact the nation's perception of his character and values. His behavior is demonstrably detrimental to Nigeria and exemplifies a disturbing trend.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, addressing stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benin City, Edo State, made a scathing remark about the PDP and the ADC. He labeled them "defunct" and "inconsequential" in the context of the 2027 general elections, using disparaging terms such as "Adamu United," "Adama," "Ada-Obi," and even referencing the former airline, "ADC." He specifically mentioned former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, a PDP vice-presidential candidate, saying that Okowa had "seen the light" by aligning with the APC. Akpabio further declared his support for the APC and Bola Tinubu.

This sparked immediate and furious backlash from prominent PDP figures, including Bode George. George, a seasoned PDP chieftain, condemned Akpabio's remarks as both ungrateful and disrespectful, highlighting Akpabio's political debt to the PDP. George directly challenged Akpabio, questioning who provided the platform for his rise to governorship in Akwa Ibom State, emphasizing that the PDP had been instrumental in his political trajectory. He reminded Akpabio that history would recall the PDP's significant contributions to the careers of many politicians, including Akpabio and Okowa. Furthermore, he implied that Okowa's recent decisions were questionable, insinuating a potential conflict of interest or political pressure.

The APC's Senate President's declaration also drew criticism from Bolaji Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the ADC. Abdullahi refuted Akpabio's dismissal of the opposition coalition, arguing that the ruling party's anxieties were evident in their rhetoric. Abdullahi asserted that the ADC was focused on its plans to defeat the APC and that the ruling party's actions reflected a degree of panic. He characterized the APC's response as a desperate attempt to distract attention from more substantive issues.

The exchange between Akpabio, George, and Abdullahi underscores the deeply entrenched political divisions and the rampant disregard for political principles within Nigeria's political landscape. The statements, particularly the accusations of ingratitude and disrespect leveled against Akpabio, highlight the pervasiveness of political opportunism and self-interest among Nigerian politicians. The pattern of defections, dismissals of political opponents, and use of government resources for personal gain damages the credibility of the political process and reinforces negative public perceptions. The entire episode serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for greater political maturity, accountability, and a commitment to genuine public service among Nigerian leaders.
