I Want People To be Impacted And Blessed By My Writings- Vanessa Akuboh-Inyang

Vanessa Akuboh-Inyang is a Counselor and an Author. She aims to impact lives and inspire through her writings. Vanessa, who has published 3 books so far, says it's never too late to start writing but advises one to start early if possible. Takemygist had a chat with her.

TMG》When did you discover your love for writing?

VAI》I think my love for writing developed with my love for reading and wanting to preserve experiences and knowledge so that other people can have access to it. I used to read tons of fictions, biographies and autobiographies. It just made me want to tell stories. I studied Mass Communication in Covenant University and I got to write scripts, feature articles, interviews and all that. Then my work with Leadership Group Newspaper as both a group news and online reporter further fueled my desire to write. I journal a lot and sometimes when I go over what I wrote years ago, even I am surprised at the depth and truth in the words.

TMG》Who encouraged you to start writing?

VAI》I went through an experience that I believe God led me to document. I was counseling a lot ladies that went through similar experiences and it was overwhelming repeating the same things over and over again. One day,  I just had a witness in my heart to pen what I wanted to say down... And boom! Three books have emerged.

TMG》Tell us about your books and achievement?

VAI》I have written three books titled 'Broken and Whole', 'The Teenagers Guide To Happiness' and 'Dealing With The Spirit of Rejection'. My life is still a journey and I learn to get over successes and failures quite quickly. All that I have and all the open doors I have been privileged to walk through I count as a blessing not an achievement. I owe it all to God Almighty and I thank Him with all my heart.

TMG》Which of your books is more popular?

VAI》 I would say 'Broken and Whole' is for people whose hearts have been broken and who need to make better judgement about relationships going forward, 'The Teenagers Guide to Happiness' is for teenagers (obviously), even though I have had adults give me impact reviews about it as well; and 'Dealing with the Spirit of Rejection' is for everyone.

TMG》Have you written in other languages before?

VAI》No, I haven't. It's something I hope to do eventually to reach more people.

TMG》Which of your books Is your favorite and how many books have you published?

VAI》I have published 3 books; my favourite would be 'Dealing with the Spirit of Rejection' because it marinated in my heart.

TMG》How do you make readers like your books?

VAI》Well, a reading will convince you! Haha! But I get other people who have read it to give reviews and talk about their experiences reading them and that helps a lot.

TMG》Where do you get your ideas from?

VAI》From God. Experiences. God's help through my experiences. Honestly, every idea starts as a thought and because I am very conservative and don't really like to put myself out there, I know that there are people who will be impacted and blessed by my writing. It's not for everyone and I understand that. But I write for them - the people who God wants to help through me and it's such an honor.

TMG》How old were you when did your first book?

VAI》I was 28 when I started writing but didn't publish till I turned 30! It's never too late to start but start early if you can!

TMG》What else occupies your time apart from writing?

VAI》I am a counselor. I offer premarital counseling, psychosocial and emotional counseling for children and adolescents, and I offer goal setting and growth planning courses. I love people and most of what I do centres on helping people become the healthiest versions of themselves. I also love being a wife and invest a lot of time at the homefront as well.

TMG》Do you get enough encouragement from family & friends?

VAI》Yes! Very much so. My Husband, my Dad, Mum, my siblings, my in-laws and my friends are really part of a beautiful support system I am blessed to have. They encourage me, they patronise me, they mention my name in rooms that blow my mind. They want to see me win, and I love that about them. They offer to proofread my books and offer constructive criticisms. Honestly they are the best!

TMG》How do you know people appreciate your work?

VAI》Referrals, invitation to speak both offline and online, purchase of things I put out and participation in things I am part of. But I have learnt that I am performing for the audience of One! And that's the Almighty. As long as He is happy with me, I am good. We all seek validation from people and the ones we love, but that in itself can be a trap because your emotions will be a rollercoaster which means you'll be happy when they are happy and sad when they disapprove of you. That's not a great way to spend your days on earth.
