Essential Components of a Healthy Lifestyle: Physical Exercise, Rest, and Personal Hygiene
By, Dr Wey George Danlami Consultant-Family Physician
Physical exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. People engage in physical exercise for various reasons, such as increasing growth and development, strengthening muscles, improving cardiovascular health, developing athletic skills, boosting the immune system, managing weight, and simply for enjoyment.
Regular physical activity has numerous benefits, including reducing anxiety and depression, enhancing cognitive function, preventing hypertension, improving mental health, overall quality of life, and managing obesity.
Some components of physical activity include aerobic exercise, strength training, flexibility exercises, and balance training.
India has the second-highest number of obese children in the world, with about 14.4 million overweight children. Proper rest is essential for physical and mental health, just like diet and exercise. Rest is crucial for growth, development, metabolism, and overall well-being. Adequate sleep is essential for the body's recovery, strengthening the immune system, muscle tissue repair, and energy production. Without enough rest, individuals experience reduced physical activity, decreased muscle strength, and various health issues.
Personal hygiene plays a vital role in maintaining health and preventing the spread of diseases. It involves practices that help to preserve overall well-being by keeping the body and clothing clean. Personal hygiene practices include habits like bathing, handwashing, nail care, and changing clothes. Cleanliness is crucial in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases.
Hygiene components include eye hygiene, hair hygiene, body hygiene, oral hygiene, feet hygiene, hand hygiene, and clothes hygiene. It is recommended to maintain a certain frequency for each hygiene practice to ensure optimal health and cleanliness.
- Eye hygiene: Daily in the morning and whenever the face is dirty
- Hair hygiene: Weekly twice, preferably once every other day
- Body hygiene: Once or twice a day
- Oral hygiene: Brushing twice a day, rinsing the mouth after each meal
- Feet hygiene: Daily
- Hand hygiene: After touching contaminated surfaces and before eating
- Clothes hygiene: Once or twice a day
By incorporating regular physical exercise, adequate rest, and proper personal hygiene practices into daily routines, individuals can significantly improve their overall health and well-being.
