Pregnancy and Intimacy: What You Need to Know About Sex During Pregnancy

~~ Dr. Wey George Danlami Consultant-Family Physician

Is it safe to have sex while pregnant? The amniotic fluid in the uterus and the strong muscles of the uterus provide protection to your growing baby. Generally, having sex is safe during pregnancy unless you have specific health concerns such as preterm labor or placenta problems. However, it's important to note that pregnancy can bring about changes in your level of comfort during sex and your interest in it.

Can sex during pregnancy lead to a miscarriage? Miscarriage refers to the sudden loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. It's important to understand that having sex while pregnant does not cause a miscarriage. In most cases, miscarriages occur due to fetal growth issues. It is common to experience cramps or spotting after sex or orgasm. If you have severe cramping or heavy bleeding similar to a menstrual period, it is advised to contact your healthcare professional.

What are the best sexual positions during pregnancy? Most sexual positions are suitable during pregnancy as long as they are comfortable for you. If a position causes discomfort, try another one. As your belly grows, it may be necessary to experiment with different positions to find what works best for you. The key is to prioritize pleasure and comfort.

Do you need to use condoms during pregnancy? It is important to avoid sexually transmitted infections during pregnancy as they can lead to significant health issues for both you and your baby. Refrain from vaginal, oral, and anal sex if your partner has a sexually transmitted infection. Condoms are recommended if you or your partner engages in sexual activity with others or if you have a new partner during pregnancy.

Are there situations when sex is not recommended during pregnancy? While having sex or an orgasm can cause contractions of the uterus, it is usually not a cause for concern. Your healthcare provider may advise against sex if you experience vaginal bleeding, leak amniotic fluid, have early cervical dilation (cervical incompetence), partial or complete coverage of the cervical opening by the placenta (placenta previa), or have a history of premature labor or birth.

What if you do not want to have sex during pregnancy? It's completely normal if you experience nausea or fatigue that impacts your desire for sex. Openly communicate your needs and concerns with your partner in a loving manner. If you are not in the mood for sex, remember that there are other ways to foster intimacy such as cuddling, kissing, or giving each other a massage. Prioritize open communication and mutual respect in your relationship during this special time.
