Mahalia Aisha Ahman-Pategi: Legacy, Service, and the Case for Kwara’s Next Governor
_From a family of political giants, Mama Oyoyo steps forward with grassroots experience and a vision for inclusive governance_
For years now, Honourable Mahalia Aisha Ahman-Pategi has stepped into the shoes of her late father, Late Alhaji Ahman Saba, who served as a minister and chairman of boards in the First Republic. The Ahman-Pategi name is not new to Kwara politics. It runs through Kwara North like a thread of service and sacrifice.
Her brother, Honourable Suleiman Ahman, was once in the House of Representatives. He was followed by the late Ahmadu Sardauna Ahman-Pategi, who died as Chairman of PDP and before then was a Senatorial candidate. Then came Honourable Aliyu Ahman-Pategi, who also served for years in the House of Representatives and was a candidate to contest for Governorship before his life was cut short.
Now, a Princess from that same house has served as Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Development, and is going for the Governorship position of Kwara State. There’s no doubt she’s truly the daughter of a politically grounded family. It is in the blood.
Tested at the Grassroots, Ready to Lead
As Commissioner, Hon. Mahalia Aisha Ahman-Pategi did not lead from afar. She engaged communities, listened to their needs, and delivered results people could see and feel. She is widely known as a woman of integrity — calm, focused, and principled. She does not rely on noise or empty rhetoric. She allows her work to speak, her results to convince, and her character to inspire trust.
She comes from a distinguished background of service and humility. As the daughter of Ahman Pategi, she inherits a legacy of discipline, honesty, and national service. As the younger sister of Aliyu Ahman-Pategi, founder of Ahman Pategi University, she is part of a family that has consistently invested in people, education, and development.
But Hon. Mahalia is not defined by her background alone — she is defined by her readiness.
Why Kwara Needs Women in Governance
Including women in governance isn’t just about fairness, it strengthens how decisions are made and who benefits from them.
1. Broader representation, better policies
Women make up roughly half of the population. When they’re part of decision-making, issues like maternal healthcare, girls’ education, market access for traders, and child welfare get real attention and funding. Governments end up addressing the needs of the whole population, not just part of it.
2. Different leadership strengths
Research across countries shows women leaders often score higher on collaboration, transparency, and long-term planning. Rwanda and New Zealand both saw strong social development gains under high female representation. Diverse teams also tend to be less corrupt — they break up old boys’ networks and increase accountability.
3. Economic growth
According to the World Bank, countries with more gender balance in governance see faster GDP growth. Women leaders frequently prioritize budgets for education, healthcare, and SMEs — sectors that create jobs and raise household incomes. For a state like Kwara, that means more empowered entrepreneurs and traders, many of whom are women.
4. Role modeling and social change
When girls see women as governors, commissioners, and LG chairpersons, it shifts what they believe is possible. That changes school enrollment, career ambition, and early marriage rates within one generation.
5. The Kwara context
Kwara has had strong women in public life — from professionals to grassroots mobilizers. Yet the state still lags in female representation at executive levels. Bringing more women into governance would tap that unused talent pool and ensure regions like Kwara North, where women play huge roles in farming and markets, have a direct voice in policy.
The goal is not about replacing men. It’s about building a leadership team that reflects the people it serves. Mixed-gender governance tends to be more responsive, less factional, and more focused on everyday quality of life.

A Step Taken for All
“Yesterday, I took a step… but this is bigger than me. I officially submitted my Letter of Intent at the APC State Secretariat to our Party Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbem. This is for every market woman. Every youth with a dream. Every father, every mother, every voice that has waited to be heard. Kwara is rising. Kwara belongs to us all.”
At this critical time, Kwara needs:
A leader who understands the grassroots and prioritizes the people
A leader who chooses integrity over convenience
A leader who unites rather than divides
A leader who delivers results, not excuses
A leader with both legacy and capacity
