Cholera Outbreak: A Deadly Consequence of Contaminated Water and Poor Sanitation

By, Dr Wey George Danlami Consultant Family Physician

Cholera, an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio Cholera, has been linked to the consumption of contaminated water and inadequate sanitation. This disease continues to pose a global threat to public health and serves as an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.

The toxin produced by the cholera bacteria in the small intestine leads to a rapid loss of fluids and salts, resulting in severe dehydration and diarrhoea. While most people with cholera can be treated with oral rehydration, severely dehydrated individuals may require intravenous fluids and antibiotics to manage the illness.

Prevention strategies for cholera include ensuring the use of bottled, chlorinated, boiled, or filtered water, proper disposal of stool, thorough cleaning of contaminated surfaces, and practicing food safety measures such as peeling raw fruits and vegetables and cooking food thoroughly. By implementing these preventive measures, the spread of cholera can be significantly reduced, ultimately saving lives and preventing outbreaks.
