Kano Emirate Conflict: Durbar Festivities Could Exacerbate Emergency
~~Ahman Makams
The situation in Kano State mirrors a dangerous parallel to the recently declared state of emergency in Rivers State, and warrants immediate attention to prevent a similar, potentially disastrous outcome. President Tinubu's actions in Rivers State, ostensibly to quell political unrest and pipeline vandalism stemming from a feud between the governor and his predecessor, serve as a stark warning. The Kano government, Emirs - Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, and the people of Kano must heed this cautionary tale.
The ongoing dispute over the Kano emirate, with two rival emirs claiming legitimacy and planning separate Durbar celebrations, creates a volatile situation ripe for escalation. This isn't simply a traditional dispute; it's a power struggle with the potential to destabilize the entire state. The fact that both sides allegedly have backing from different levels of government further exacerbates the risk. The situation is analogous to the Rivers State conflict, where a clash between the governor and the state assembly, fueled by factional politics, threatened to destabilize the entire region.
The Kano State government's apparent attempt to navigate this crisis by initiating an Emirate council and ordering Durbar preparations under the leadership of Emir Sanusi II is a risky gamble. While the governor claims a harmonious relationship between the emirs, the planned simultaneous Durbar celebrations by both Sanusi II and Ado Bayero directly contradicts this assertion and exposes the fragility of the peace. This dual celebration risks igniting widespread unrest and clashes amongst the populace.
Therefore, the following actions are crucial:
Kano State Government: A more decisive and inclusive approach is needed. Ignoring the depth of the conflict and simply proceeding with the planned Durbar risks provoking violence. Open dialogue and a clear, legally sound resolution to the Emirate leadership dispute are paramount. A compromise that acknowledges both claimants' standing within the community might be necessary, even if it deviates from established traditions.
Emirs Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero: Both emirs must prioritize the well-being of the Kano people above personal ambitions. They must engage in serious negotiations to find a peaceful resolution to their dispute. Contesting the Durbar with parallel celebrations risks sparking widespread conflict.
The People of Kano: Vigilance and responsible citizenship are crucial. The people of Kano must not allow themselves to be drawn into violence. They must exercise restraint, promote peace, and encourage dialogue between the conflicting parties.
Ignoring the warning signs from Rivers State would be a grave mistake. The potential for federal intervention, mirroring the state of emergency in Rivers State, is very real. The Kano government and its leaders must act decisively and responsibly to prevent a similar crisis, which could lead to a significant loss of life, social unrest, and damage to Kano's image. The current situation is a tinderbox; a single spark could ignite widespread chaos.
