Niger South Senatorial Zone A: A 2027 Election Preview – Too Early to Call?

~~ Ahman Makams

The 2027 Nigerian senatorial elections are still over two years away, yet the online buzz surrounding the Niger South Senatorial Zone A (Nupe-speaking) is already heating up.  A recent X poll highlighted several prominent names, sparking speculation and setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested race.  The early frontrunners, as identified online, include Hon. Muazu Jantabo, Sen. Bima Enagi, Hon. Sani Kutigi, and surprisingly, former Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman, Mohammed Nami.  While such early pronouncements are premature, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the potential dynamics of the upcoming election.

The inclusion of Mohammed Nami is perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this nascent campaign.  A relative newcomer to the political arena, Nami’s lack of prior electoral experience is a significant hurdle. While his tenure at FIRS undoubtedly provided him with valuable administrative skills, translating that success into electoral victory requires a different skill set entirely.  He will need to cultivate a strong grassroots presence and build a formidable campaign organization from the ground up.  His chances, as I see it, are currently at approximately 50%, significantly behind the more established candidates. He possesses significant resources, however, he must move outside the comfort of his existing professional network to truly connect with the electorate.

The other candidates present a more familiar picture.  Hon. Muazu Jantabo, a veteran politician with a proven track record, commands considerable respect within Niger State. His consistent electoral success, from Lapai Local Government Chairman to his current role as Commissioner, speaks volumes about his political acumen and ability to connect with voters.  While he currently expresses reluctance to run, his history suggests he's a strong contender should he decide to enter the race.

Sen. Bima Enagi’s inclusion is more complicated. While previously holding the Senate seat for Zone A, his tenure was marked by what many perceive as shortcomings and a lack of accessibility. This perception, coupled with unfulfilled expectations, could significantly hinder his chances of regaining the seat. Winning back the trust of the electorate will require a complete overhaul of his approach.

Hon. Sani Kutigi, a former House of Representatives member and gubernatorial candidate, boasts considerable experience and recognition within - outside the state. His past campaigns demonstrate a robust political network and the ability to garner considerable votes.  His near-victory in the gubernatorial primary race is a strong indication of his popularity and potential.

This early snapshot reveals a diverse field of candidates, each with their strengths and weaknesses.  The race is far from settled; many more names are sure to emerge before the 2027 elections. The coming years will be crucial in shaping the narrative, testing the candidates' strategies, and ultimately, determining who will represent Niger South Senatorial Zone A in the National Assembly.  The contest will likely turn on issues of accessibility, responsiveness, and the ability to connect with the needs and aspirations of the people of Zone A.  It will be a fascinating race to watch unfold.
