Today's Friday Sermon: Unlocking the Rewards, The Blessed Six Days of Shawwal

~~ Mahmud Ashraf

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

Today, as we reflect on the profound spiritual journey of Ramadan, we turn our attention to an act of profound devotion that follows in its wake – the six days of voluntary fasting in Shawwal.  This practice, deeply rooted in our Prophet's (peace be upon him) teachings and rich in rewards, is not merely an extension of Ramadan's discipline, but a powerful opportunity for continued spiritual growth and connection with Allah.

Why these six days?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged Muslims to fast six days in Shawwal, emphasizing the immense rewards awaiting those who undertake this practice. He (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan, and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the whole year." (Bukhari, Muslim).  This profound hadith highlights the exceptional merit of these six days, placing them on par with a full year of fasting. This isn't about exceeding the obligatory fast, but about deepening our connection with Allah, striving for further self-improvement, and experiencing the richness of continuous spiritual practice.

The Importance and Benefits:

The voluntary fast in Shawwal isn't just about abstaining from food and drink; it's a profound spiritual journey that brings numerous benefits.

Strengthening the bond with Allah: Fasting, at its core, is a way to draw closer to Allah. The six days of Shawwal provide another opportunity for self-reflection, supplication, and increased remembrance of Allah.

Continuous purification and spiritual growth: Ramadan leaves us with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment. Fasting in Shawwal allows us to continue this spiritual momentum, shedding worldly attachments and cultivating piety.

Greater reward and blessings: The Prophet (peace be upon him) promised increased rewards for the diligent observance of this practice. Every act of worship, especially voluntary acts, earns us immense blessings from Allah.

Spiritual discipline and self-control: Fasting in Shawwal refines our ability to control our desires, further enhancing the discipline ingrained during Ramadan.

Community building: Engaging in collective supplication and reflection during this period further fosters the community spirit.

Gaining from the Fast:

Beyond the spiritual benefits, there are practical gains to be had from fasting in Shawwal.

Strengthening willpower: The consistent discipline ingrained during Ramadan and continued through Shawwal equips us to better face life's challenges with renewed resolve.

Increased empathy and compassion: Fasting often allows us to feel the suffering of those less fortunate, leading to increased empathy and compassion.

A deeper understanding of our faith: Consistent spiritual practice deepens our connection to Islamic principles and allows us to internalize them more effectively.

Finally, my brothers and sisters, undertaking the six days of fasting in Shawwal is a tremendous opportunity for spiritual enrichment and personal growth. Let us embrace this blessed period with sincerity and devotion, seeking Allah's pleasure and striving to emulate the noble example of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him). May Allah accept our good deeds and grant us strength to continue on this path of righteousness.

Ameen.

Important Note: It's crucial to ensure that those undertaking the fast are able to do so without hardship.  Physical limitations should be considered, and those who are ill or weak should refrain.  The emphasis should always be on maintaining health and wellbeing while striving for spiritual betterment.
