If You Have A Passion For Anything, Push And Push Until You Achieve Your Goal- Jane Momoh
Jane is the CEO of Jane's Cuisines and Events in Abuja. She spoke to Takemygist about how her thriving catering business started
TMG> Please introduce yourself.
JM> My name is Jane Momoh, I'm from Edo State and a graduate of Auchi Polytechnic. I'm the CEO of Janes Cuisines and Events in Abuja.
TMG> Why did you decide to go into the catering business?
JM> I worked with a construction company for almost 10 years before leaving to start my own business because of my passion for cooking. I began cooking when I was 11 years old and my dream is to become an international chef.
TMG> Did you attend culinary school & management classes for events? What credentials did you earn through your classes?
JM> Yes, I went to the 1st and best culinary school in Nigeria, REDDISH CHRONICLES, Abuja branch in 2019. I also trained in mixology with Peexquisite Events & Cocktails, Lagos in 2019.
TMG> Tell us about your favourite foods and others you can make.
JM> Our forte is in African and continental dishes.
TMG> How do you resolve the menu development and overall design during or before an event?
JM> We conduct a Market survey to avoid shortage. One has to always check the prices of all one needs at the market.
TMG> How many employees report to you?
JM> Right now I have about 15 employees that report to me.
TMG> What do you do to stay educated about new trends?
JM> By checking new updates online and through market surveys I learn new things. It is like research on its own.
TMG> What are your challenges and how do you intend to handle them?
JM> Increases in prices affect us a lot; in the end, if we want to work, we just have to go with what our clients are offering us. There’s nothing we can do at the moment but to flow to keep us busy.
TMG> What do you do to insure the quality of the food going out to customers?
JM>The food should always be presentable and in good condition. People should get attracted to good food and recommend us to others.
TMG> Give us an example of someone you have trained or mentored.
JM>We group our employees to have more training, both physical and online classes and they are doing great. That's all I can say for now.
TMG> How do you ensure/test the quality of your ingredients?
JM> With my experience, I can easily choose good produce, meats, fish, and fruit. You learn where to shop and who supplies the products that you desire. If you go to a farmers market you ask for samples and talk to the salesperson, it's in their best interest to make you happy so you’ll come back. You also have to teach yourself what to look for and what to avoid. The way you do that is by tasting, smelling and looking at it. Use your judgement; if it looks or smells bad, it probably is. If it’s cheap, it’s either in season or something is wrong with it.
TMG> Tell us about an accomplishment that you are most proud of in your career.
JM> I'm most proud of managing a successful business for three years. My team worked tirelessly to ensure that everything worked smoothly.
TMG> Tell us about your management style and how you handle your Customers.
IJM> In terms of what makes me unique, I also go out of my way to ensure I know when my team needs help. I don't hang around and wait to be called upon before I go to them. That means plenty of informal check-ins, both on the work they're doing and on their general job satisfaction and mental well-being.
TMG> Tell us 3 things you consider to be your strengths as a caterer.
JM> 1. I pay a lot of attention to details.
2. My love for people and food
3. Ability to handle pressure.
TMG> Tell us something you would like to learn or improve upon as an event planner.
JM> Life itself is a learning process; I learn every day. Therefore, I keep learning everything.
TMG> How unique is your cooking and what do they think of you as a caterer?
JM> My cooking is very unique and people recommend me to others. I also get encouragement from loved ones.
TMG> What way can you encourage other youths who want to start a business like yours?
JM> I would advise them to start small. And to be patient. Slowly but surely.
TMG> Do you have time to socialise and how?
JM> No time to socialise for now. I engage myself with books and research to improve every day.
