Uchenna Onwuamaegbu Ugwu is a person who refers to herself as a STEMprenure and STEM Advocate, a Facilitator/Teacher and CEO of Edufun Technik. She has over 3 years experience on implementation of education for children and youth. She speaks to TMG on what the project's aims are and its benefits to students and Nigeria as a whole.


TMG> Tell us about your background and STEM:

Uchenna> I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nigeria, studied Business and Entrepreneurship at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University Illinois and I'm a Mandela Washington Fellow (MWF).
STEM stands for (Science Technology Engineering) with a focus on 3-18 year-olds in underprivileged communities in Nigeria, ensuring 50% are girls. We specifically focus on developing their potentials, skills and talents by providing them with quality training, Hands- On Coding, Programming, Design, Engineering and Robotics, and guiding them to make good career decisions for societal/community impact.


TMG> How many students have benefitted  from STEM so far?

Uchenna> We have covered over 500 classes of STEM curriculum from 2014 till now and have trained 1200 pupils and 2100 students in workshops, after school and in class activities. I consult for schools on matters relating STEM/Robotics Education.


TMG> What impact are you aiming to achieve with STEM? 

Uchenna> We see STEM as the aid we all need to foster the technological inventions and innovations. I also bridge this gap of lack of interest of students in STEM subjects by our earnest commitment to our vision which is: To stir up the love of (STEM) in children and youths from primary school to tertiary educational level, by bringing technology to the classroom for societal, socio-economic development in Nigeria and beyond. STEM education is the only way to achieve that.


TMG> Can you tell us more about EDUFUN and what it stands for?

Uchenna> Edufun Technik provides educational solution on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM),for Children and Youths in underprivileged communities,  focusing on Hands-on Coding, Programming, Design, Engineering and Robotics. To inspire Great Thinkers, Problem Solvers, Innovators for societal impact.

Our program is designed for individuals, private and public schools, community centers, specialized and other educational centers.


TMG> What is the mission of STEM and its benefit to general society?

Uchenna> Our Mission is to re-strengthen and positively overhaul the foundation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Nigeria, by providing innovative, STEM-Centric, hands–on technology education.

We engage learning at every level with real world learning opportunities that exposes students to their innate abilities or potentials thus aiding them to choose their career in STEM or related fields that our nation may rise high on the ladder of science and technology as nations like China, Japan and USA are doing now.


TMG> What is the vision and way forward on your project?

Uchenna> To stir up the love of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in children and youths from primary school to tertiary educational level.

-To help Nigeria as a nation attain its vision of becoming number one among the league of nations developed scientifically, technologically and industrially.

-To become the number one key player in the educational sector consequent role in national and international development, through our increasing and dynamic training strategies.

-To erase unemployment from among youths by instilling in a learner how to become inventive and innovative.


TMG> What inspired you to take on this project?

Uchenna> A simple Lego game I saw for the first time as an adult and watching a group of children play and attempt to build Robots at an event was my inspiration to set up Edufun Technik Company.

Growing up in a rural community with no access to technology in Nigeria, I understand from my experience leading causes of the dearth of Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria. I, like, many children never had the opportunity to have hands on activities that promote STEM.
