~~ Dr. Aiyeku Olufemi Samuel

The current dynamics of leadership and mentorship in Nigeria, highlights the challenges, and offers practical recommendations for fostering a more inclusive and progressive political environment.

In the intricate tapestry of Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, leadership and mentorship are pivotal forces that drive societal growth, particularly at the grassroots level. As Nigeria continues to evolve, the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders through effective mentorship cannot be overstated. However, a persistent challenge in the Nigerian context is the reluctance of older leaders to relinquish power and provide younger, mentored individuals with opportunities to lead and grow. This write-up explores the current trends in leadership and mentorship, the challenges of followership, and offers recommendations for a more inclusive and forward-looking political environment.

Current Trends in Leadership and Mentorship

Leadership and mentorship in Nigeria are often rooted in hierarchical structures where experience and seniority are highly valued. This model has been instrumental in preserving traditional knowledge and ensuring continuity in governance and societal norms. However, as the world becomes more dynamic and the demands of leadership shift towards innovation and adaptability, the traditional approach to mentorship is increasingly being questioned.

Mentorship in Nigeria typically involves an older, more experienced individual guiding a younger person through the complexities of leadership and governance. This relationship is meant to equip the mentee with the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to succeed. Yet, despite this, many young leaders find themselves stifled, unable to progress beyond the shadow of their mentors. This has led to a growing sense of frustration among the youth, who feel that they are being denied the opportunity to lead and effect change.

Challenges in Leadership and Mentorship

Reluctance to Relinquish Power: One of the most significant challenges in Nigerian mentorship is the reluctance of older leaders to step aside and allow the younger generation to take the reins. This reluctance is often fuelled by a desire to maintain control and a belief that the younger generation is not yet ready to lead.

- Stagnation of Ideas: When older leaders dominate the leadership landscape, there is a risk of stagnation, where new ideas and innovative approaches are stifled. This can hinder progress and prevent the adoption of modern solutions to emerging challenges.

- Tokenism in Mentorship: In some cases, mentorship is reduced to mere tokenism, where young leaders are given nominal positions with little actual influence or decision-making power. This undermines the purpose of mentorship and leaves young leaders disillusioned.

- Lack of Trust: There is often a lack of trust between the older and younger

generations, with each viewing the other with suspicion. This mistrust can create a toxic environment where collaboration is difficult, and the potential for growth is limited.

Recommendations for Addressing the Challenges

- Creating a Culture of Succession Planning: There needs to be a deliberate

effort to create a culture of succession planning within Nigerian leadership structures. Older leaders should recognize the importance of grooming and empowering the next generation and should actively work towards creating pathways for young leaders to assume positions of influence.

- Institutionalizing Mentorship Programs: Mentorship should be

institutionalized within political parties and government structures, with clear guidelines on the responsibilities of mentors and the expected outcomes of mentorship relationships. This will ensure that mentorship is taken seriously and that it leads to tangible results.

- Promoting Collaborative Leadership Models: Rather than a top-down approach, there should be a shift towards collaborative leadership models that encourage input and ideas from both older and younger leaders. This will help to bridge the generational gap and foster a more inclusive leadership culture.

- Empowering Youth through Legal Frameworks: The government should consider enacting laws and policies that mandate the inclusion of youth in leadership positions. This could include quotas for youth representation in political parties and government appointments, ensuring that young leaders have a seat at the table.

- Building Trust and Mutual Respect: Efforts should be made to build trust and mutual respect between the older and younger generations. This can be achieved through dialogue, joint projects, and initiatives that require collaboration. Over time, this will help to break down barriers and create a more harmonious leadership environment.

- Leveraging Technology and Innovation: Young leaders should be encouraged to leverage technology and innovative approaches to solve societal challenges. This can be a key differentiator that allows them to demonstrate their value and competence in leadership roles.

Conclusion: A Way Forward For Nigeria to realize its full potential, particularly in grassroots politics and societal growth, it is imperative that the leadership landscape becomes more inclusive and dynamic. Older leaders must embrace the role of true mentors, not just as gatekeepers of power, but as facilitators of change who empower the next generation to lead with vision and integrity. By adopting a more progressive approach to leadership and mentorship, Nigeria can cultivate a new breed of leaders who are equipped to tackle the challenges of the 21st century and beyond.

In conclusion, the future of Nigeria’s leadership lies in the hands of both the old and the young. It is a collective journey that requires mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the greater good. By addressing the challenges of leadership and mentorship, Nigeria can create a robust political environment where every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
