Niger State Tragedy Unveils Federal Government Neglect: Urgent Appeal for Infrastructure Revitalization

The tragic incident on the Agaie-Bida road in Niger State last week Sunday shocked the nation and beyond, with at least 55 people burned beyond recognition and over 50 cattle burned alive. The scene near Man-Woro village was a horrifying one, with a petrol-laden tanker, a truck carrying cattle, and a passenger vehicle all engulfed in flames.

The victims included passengers heading to Agaie’s Sunday market and those in the cattle-laden truck, with reports indicating that the truck had started its journey from Wudil, Kano State, bound for Lagos. The tanker fell while trying to navigate the poor road conditions, leading to the fire that resulted in the loss of lives and livestock.

This avoidable disaster highlights the longstanding neglect of Niger State by the Federal Government in terms of infrastructure development. Despite consistently voting for the ruling party, Niger State has been overlooked for decades, despite its strategic location in coordinating road networks to the South, East, and North, as well as being at the center of the Middle Belt for business activities.

Niger State's significance is further emphasized by the belief that whoever wins the Presidential election in Niger State ultimately becomes the President of the country. However, the state continues to struggle with dilapidated federal roads, with the Minna Suleja road construction project dragging on for almost 18 years.

The proximity of Niger State to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has not translated into tangible benefits for its residents. Projects like the Baro federal port have failed to deliver on promises, while issues like erratic power supply, poor road infrastructure, and the presence of bandits further compound the challenges faced by the people of Niger State.

The people of Niger State, however, hope that with the new administration under Governor Hon Umaru Bago and support from the Tinubu administration, Niger State can finally experience a transformation. By implementing innovative policies and engaging with the federal government to prioritize the development of critical infrastructure like road networks and social amenities, Niger State can tap into its full potential and foster sustainable growth for its residents. It is time to address the longstanding issues and bring about positive change for the people of Niger State.
