Friday Sermon Calls for Muslim Unity in Fighting Poverty

~~ Mahmud Ashraf

Today's Friday sermon focused on the issue of poverty and the responsibility of Muslims to help those in need. The imam emphasized that it is important for Muslims to remember that poverty is a calamity that can afflict anyone, and that it is their duty to assist those who are less fortunate.

In the Quran, Allah has reminded believers of the importance of caring for the poor and needy. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, "And those in whose wealth there is a recognized right for the needy and the poor" (2:177). This verse serves as a reminder that it is the duty of the wealthy to share their blessings with those who are less fortunate.

When people are suffering from poverty, it is important for Muslims to remember that their wealth and resources are a trust from Allah. In Surah Al-Ma'arij, Allah warns against neglecting the rights of the poor, saying, "And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment" (70:35-36).

The causes of poverty are varied and complex, but it is important for Muslims to realize that it is not just about lack of material possessions. Poverty can also manifest as a lack of access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for employment. It is the duty of Muslims to work towards addressing these root causes of poverty and to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live a dignified life.

When the rich overlook the poor and fail to provide assistance, it goes against the teachings of Islam. In Surah Al-Insan, Allah says, "And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive" (76:8). This verse emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need, even if it means sacrificing something that one loves.

In order to please Allah and receive His blessings, Muslims must actively seek out ways to help those who are suffering from poverty. This can be done through charitable donations, volunteering, or advocating for policies that address the root causes of poverty. By following the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, Muslims can ensure that they are fulfilling their duty to help those who are less fortunate.

It is important for Muslims to remember that poverty is a test from Allah, and that those who are in a position to help have a responsibility to do so. By reaching out to those in need and showing compassion and kindness, Muslims can demonstrate their commitment to fulfilling their duty to Allah and to their fellow human beings. As the imam concluded the sermon, he reminded the congregation that answering the calls of the poor and needy is a means of earning Allah's mercy and blessings, and that it is a way to ensure that our prayers are answered.

Jumu'ah Mubarak
