TMG> Tell us about your background?
Maryam> I was born and brought up in Abuja and Kaduna by both parents and I'm the 2nd of 3 children. I attended Shining Star Nursery and Primary school. For high school, I attended Grays International College Kaduna and transferred to Shining Star and did my final year at Nigerian Ghana International College, Abuja. I have a diploma in Mass communications and doing my degree in English and Literary Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
TMG> What made you go into business?
Maryam> Honestly, the money part was what first gave me the zeal because growing up, I went from bead making to making and selling zobo but it also felt really good that I was getting paid for my hard work.
TMG> What sort of goods does your company sell?
Maryam> Aromaree sells all sorts of Arabian fragrances from oils, sprays, incense and burners, diffusers, you name it.
TMG> Which areas do you need to improve in your company?
Maryam> In every part really, because as you grow in a business you have to make adjustments. Mine would be better packaging and having someone to help me with sorting and delivery.
TMG> What do you feel is the next step in developing your sales skills?
Maryam> The next step would be to get a stable place where customers can always stop by, having an online store, then getting distributors in some states.
TMG> What are some of the challenges you have faced in starting your company?
Maryam> I did not really face major challenges while starting up because Alhamdulillah, I have supportive family and friends.
TMG> What style of management do you think works in becoming successful at your kind of business?
Maryam> People have their different individual styles that works best for them and it’s best to stick to it. For me, I would say, working hard, consistency, prayer and setting a goal.
TMG> Have you ever lost during sales and what did you learn?
Maryam> With every business comes losses and risks and I've learnt it’s not always a win win!
TMG> When do you stop pursuing a client?
Maryam> You never stop pursuing a client because you need them. You also need them happy with you so you get positive referrals
TMG> Who are you comfortable selling to and why?
Maryam> People who really know it’s not about the quantity or price but what the product is worth. I’m open to anyone that needs my service.
TMG> What motivates you?
Maryam> I’m my own major motivation! Having strong will power is important.
TMG> What is your ultimate career aspiration?
Maryam> I have always wanted to be an ambassador/ she-boss and In Sha Allah, I will some day
TMG> How do you keep a smile on your face during a hard day to make sure your clients feel good?
Maryam> Always remember that you are getting paid
TMG> In terms of sales skills, where would you like to get even better?
Maryam> I need to have better publicity
TMG> Tell us about the greatest goal that you’ve ever accomplished professionally?
Maryam> Alhamdulillah, I have accomplished alot at the pace I’m going. People now know about me and what I do.
TMG> Have you remained persistent during sales, even though everyone else around you had given up?
Maryam> When you have faith in God and know he’s in control you need to stand strong and be persistent
TMG> What kinds of sacrifices have you had to make to be successful?
Maryam> My sacrifice had to be putting my money to get products for a customer and the customer later changed her mind
TMG> How do you manage risk, in terms of damages or loss?
Maryam> The best part is you don’t have alot of loss or damages as long as you are careful and don’t drop the package.
TMG> Who are your role models and people that inspire you to move on in the world?
Maryam> My parents are my biggest role models. I see how hard they work and push through everyday and still put up a smile after a rough day at work. There are times I would want to give up but they still stand strong praying for and encouraging me.
TMG> What way can you encourage other youths not to depend on government for jobs but to be self dependent?
Maryam> It’s time youths realize that, it’s every man for himself. There are more unemployed graduates still trying to figure themselves out while the employed aren't paid very well. So why not be your own boss and call the shots? I also call out to the women to get involved in entrepreneurship and not be fully dependent. Even if your husband gives you everything, save for a rainy day.
TMG> Do you socialise and when?
Maryam> I do socialize. I also love traveling but I mainly hang out with friends
