TakeMyGist Person of the Week: Rena Wakama – A Trailblazer on the Court and Beyond

This week, TakeMyGist shines a spotlight on a true inspiration: Rena Wakama.  This 32-year-old Nigerian-American isn't just making history; she's rewriting the narrative for African women in basketball.

Wakama's journey is a testament to dedication and hard work.  Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Nigerian parents, her passion for basketball ignited early, fueled by the influence of her cousin.  After a stellar collegiate career at Western Carolina University, she transitioned seamlessly into the professional world, playing for the Nigerian national team, D’Tigress, and First Bank.

But Wakama's ambition extended beyond the court.  Her academic pursuits – a Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation and a Master's in Business Administration – underscore her commitment to holistic development. This background served her well as she moved into coaching, first as Director of Women's Basketball Operations and then Assistant Coach at Manhattan College, where she honed her skills in talent development and mentorship.

In 2023, Wakama achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first female Head Coach of D’Tigress.  This appointment wasn't just symbolic; it marked the beginning of a new era for Nigerian women's basketball. Under her leadership, D’Tigress soared to unprecedented heights.

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Wakama masterminded a stunning performance, leading D’Tigress to become the first *ever* African team – male or female – to reach the quarterfinals. This historic achievement earned her the prestigious FIBA Best Coach award, a testament to her exceptional tactical prowess and inspirational leadership.

Rena Wakama’s story is more than just a sporting triumph; it's an inspiring narrative of perseverance, academic excellence, and groundbreaking achievement.  She is a role model not only for aspiring female basketball coaches but for all young women pursuing their dreams, proving that with dedication and vision, even the most ambitious goals are within reach.  Congratulations, Coach Wakama! You are truly TakeMyGist's Person of the Week.
