Women Bear the Brunt of Violent Extremism: The Disproportionate Impact on African Women

~~ Salma Ahmad

As the world observes the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism yesterday, it is important to highlight the disproportionate impact that violent extremism has on women, particularly African women. Women often bear the brunt of violent extremist attacks, facing increased risks of sexual violence, forced marriage, and other forms of exploitation.

In regions where terrorist groups like Boko Haram operate, women are specifically targeted for abduction and forced recruitment. The Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping in Nigeria is a stark example of how African women are directly affected by violent extremism. These women are not only subjected to physical harm but also endure long-lasting psychological trauma.

Furthermore, the spread of violent extremism exacerbates existing humanitarian crises in African countries, leading to mass displacement and migration. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable in these situations, facing heightened risks of trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other forms of violence.

The international community must recognize the unique challenges faced by African women in the context of violent extremism and take proactive measures to protect and support them. This includes addressing the root causes of extremism, promoting gender equality, and ensuring that women have a seat at the table in peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts.

The Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, presented by the Secretary-General, provides a comprehensive framework for addressing the underlying conditions that drive individuals to radicalize. By incorporating a gender perspective into these efforts, the international community can better protect women from the impacts of violent extremism and work towards sustainable peace and security for all.
