Just a Thought: The Alarming Rise of Women in Internet Fraud and Drug Use in Nigeria and Ways to Combat the Menace

Image
~~ Salma Ahmad  It is extremely concerning to see women and girls turning to internet fraud and drug use in our society. There could be several reasons why this is happening, such as economic hardship, lack of opportunities for women in certain industries, peer pressure, low self-esteem, and a desire for quick wealth. It is also possible that these women are being influenced by societal norms and expectations that may glorify material wealth and instant gratification. It is disheartening to hear that even married women are involved in these illegal activities. This could have detrimental effects on their families and communities, leading to broken homes, financial instability, and even health issues. To address these issues, it is important for the government and law enforcement agencies to crack down on internet fraud and drug trafficking. This can be done through increased surveillance, stricter penalties for offenders, and public awareness campaigns targeting vulnerable p...

Guarding Against Arrogance: Friday Sermon on Looking Down on Others

Image
~~ Mahmud Ashraf  Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,  Today, I want to address the issue of looking down on people. It is a common problem that many of us struggle with, whether consciously or unconsciously. On this blessed Friday, let us reflect on what Allah says in the Quran about this harmful habit and how we can strive to overcome it. Allah warns us against arrogance and looking down on others in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11: "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them, nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames."  This verse reminds us that we should not judge others or look down on them based on superficial reasons such as wealth, social status, or appearance. We must remember that only Allah knows what is truly in a person's heart and what their true worth is in His eyes. It is also importa...

ECOWAS Faces Major Setback as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Withdraw from Regional Bloc

Image
Dr. Aiyeku Olufemi Samuel Global Human Capital  & Energy Management  The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially announced the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective January 29, 2025. This development has significant implications for regional security, economic cooperation, and the future of ECOWAS. Challenges and Implications: - Security Concerns: The withdrawal of the three countries from ECOWAS may exacerbate the already fragile security situation in the Sahel region. The region is plagued by terrorist activities, and the absence of these countries from ECOWAS may hinder regional efforts to combat terrorism . - Economic Consequences: The exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS may lead to economic losses for these countries. They will no longer benefit from ECOWAS' trade liberalization schemes, and their citizens may face restrictions on movement and trade. - Regional Instability: The with...

NAFDAC Cracks Down on Aba Market, Exposing the Deadly Trade of Fake Beverages

Image
~~ Ahman Makams  The sale and consumption of fake and substandard alcoholic beverages and other beverages poses a serious threat to public health. The use of harmful chemicals, unhygienic practices, and adulteration of ingredients can lead to a range of health problems for consumers. These health issues can include but are not limited to liver damage, kidney damage, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and even death in extreme cases. Consuming fake or adulterated beverages can also lead to long-term health issues such as chronic diseases, organ damage, and a weakened immune system. The presence of harmful substances in these products can have a cumulative effect on the body over time, leading to serious health complications. Monitoring the Aba market for the sale of counterfeit products is crucial in order to protect consumers from the harmful effects of these products. By shutting down the market and confiscating fake and substandard beverages...

Catastrophic Flooding in Shonga: North Nigerian Farmers Left Reeling from Losses

Image
~~ Ahman Makams  The recent flooding incident in Shonga, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State has left a trail of devastation and despair in its wake. Several hectares of rice farmlands have been completely destroyed, with farmers from various states in the north losing millions of naira worth of investments. The overflow of the River Niger, which was supposed to be a source of life and sustenance, turned into a ruthless force of destruction. The Sahel region, known for its dry climate, was not expecting such a calamity. The question on everyone's mind is: How could this happen in a region where rain is a rare occurrence? The authorities have denied responsibility, with the Kainji Dam management pointing fingers at the Jebba Dam. The uncertainty and lack of accountability only add to the agony of the affected farmers. Years of hard work and investment have been washed away in an instant, leaving many with no source of income or livelihood. The government must step in and...

Illness Outbreak in Bida: Poverty and Poor Sanitation Blamed

Image
~~ Ahman Makams   The outbreak of a strange illness in Laruta and Edogifu areas of Bida has sent shockwaves through the community, affecting nearly 100 people with no warning signs. The symptoms include sudden collapse, coma-like states, fever, weakness, numbness, and difficulty in walking and talking coherently after regaining consciousness.  Affected individuals have been receiving treatment at state-owned hospitals and the Federal Medical Centre Bida, with some even being referred to private facilities. The panic in these areas has led to some residents fleeing in fear of the disease being airborne or contagious. However, the root cause of this outbreak can be traced back to the poor sanitation and extreme poverty prevalent in these communities. Many residents struggle to afford even two meals a day, leading to malnutrition and weakened immune systems. Some are forced to beg for food and shelter, with women even resorting to begging at night to support their families...

Taxing Nigeria to Poverty: A Critical Examination of VAT Distribution

Image
Dr. Aiyeku Olufemi Samuel Global Human Capital & Energy Management   The recent revelation at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the US is offering manufacturers a 15% Corporate Income Tax (CIT) rate, coupled with robust infrastructure and access to a massive market, highlights the competitiveness gap between Nigeria and other nations. In stark contrast, Nigeria’s CIT rate stands at 30%, a figure that raises questions about the country’s ability to attract investments and foster economic growth.  The high CIT rate in Nigeria not only deters investors but also stifles the growth of local businesses, ultimately hindering the country’s progress towards prosperity. This criticism is exacerbated by the poor state of infrastructure and weak purchasing power in Nigeria, which further diminish the attractiveness of the country to potential investors.  President Tinubu’s administration has proposed tax reforms, including a reduction in CIT rates, but critics a...

Addressing Maternal Healthcare Challenges in African Communities: The Importance of Antenatal Care and Pregnancy Support

Image
~~ Dr Wey George Danlami Consultant-Family Physician   In many African communities where access to healthcare is limited, particularly concerning essential services for pregnant women, the importance of pregnancy care cannot be overstated. Initiating antenatal care early in pregnancy is crucial for the well-being of both the mother and the baby. While it may be challenging to access healthcare services, reaching out to a midwife, GP, or maternity services as soon as pregnancy is confirmed is vital. These appointments provide necessary health checks, nutritional guidance, and discussions about pregnancy preferences, labor, and birth. Given the limited healthcare resources in many African communities, it is even more critical to seek antenatal care promptly. Early testing and assessments are essential, especially before 10 weeks of pregnancy, to address any specific health needs that may arise. Throughout pregnancy, attending antenatal appointments to monitor maternal health an...
