Catastrophic Flooding in Shonga: North Nigerian Farmers Left Reeling from Losses

~~ Ahman Makams

The recent flooding incident in Shonga, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State has left a trail of devastation and despair in its wake. Several hectares of rice farmlands have been completely destroyed, with farmers from various states in the north losing millions of naira worth of investments.

The overflow of the River Niger, which was supposed to be a source of life and sustenance, turned into a ruthless force of destruction. The Sahel region, known for its dry climate, was not expecting such a calamity. The question on everyone's mind is: How could this happen in a region where rain is a rare occurrence?

The authorities have denied responsibility, with the Kainji Dam management pointing fingers at the Jebba Dam. The uncertainty and lack of accountability only add to the agony of the affected farmers. Years of hard work and investment have been washed away in an instant, leaving many with no source of income or livelihood.

The government must step in and investigate the root cause of this disaster. The farmers in Shonga and neighboring states are facing a bleak future, with the looming threat of food insecurity. It is crucial that those responsible for the flooding be held accountable and measures be put in place to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

As the farmers mourn their losses and try to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, it is clear that urgent action is needed to address the aftermath of this devastating flood. The sad reality is that the once flourishing rice farms in Shonga now lie submerged under water, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and livelihoods in the face of natural disasters.
