Guarding Against Arrogance: Friday Sermon on Looking Down on Others
~~ Mahmud Ashraf
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Today, I want to address the issue of looking down on people. It is a common problem that many of us struggle with, whether consciously or unconsciously. On this blessed Friday, let us reflect on what Allah says in the Quran about this harmful habit and how we can strive to overcome it.
Allah warns us against arrogance and looking down on others in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11: "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them, nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames."
This verse reminds us that we should not judge others or look down on them based on superficial reasons such as wealth, social status, or appearance. We must remember that only Allah knows what is truly in a person's heart and what their true worth is in His eyes.
It is also important to remember that every individual is different and has their own strengths and weaknesses. Just because someone may not have the same opportunities or blessings as us, it does not mean that they are any less deserving of our respect and kindness.
As Muslims, we should strive to follow the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who was known for his humility and compassion towards all people, regardless of their background or social status.
Let us make a conscious effort to refrain from looking down on others and instead focus on improving ourselves and our own character. Let us treat others with kindness and compassion, knowing that we will be held accountable for our actions on the Day of Judgment.
May Allah guide us to be humble and respectful towards others and help us to overcome our tendencies to judge and look down on people. Ameen.
JazakAllah khair.
