Illness Outbreak in Bida: Poverty and Poor Sanitation Blamed

~~ Ahman Makams

The outbreak of a strange illness in Laruta and Edogifu areas of Bida has sent shockwaves through the community, affecting nearly 100 people with no warning signs. The symptoms include sudden collapse, coma-like states, fever, weakness, numbness, and difficulty in walking and talking coherently after regaining consciousness.

Affected individuals have been receiving treatment at state-owned hospitals and the Federal Medical Centre Bida, with some even being referred to private facilities. The panic in these areas has led to some residents fleeing in fear of the disease being airborne or contagious.

However, the root cause of this outbreak can be traced back to the poor sanitation and extreme poverty prevalent in these communities. Many residents struggle to afford even two meals a day, leading to malnutrition and weakened immune systems. Some are forced to beg for food and shelter, with women even resorting to begging at night to support their families.

It is crucial for the government to intervene and address the underlying issues of poverty and lack of access to basic necessities in these areas. Policies need to be put in place to support the most vulnerable members of society and ensure that no one is left behind. By addressing the root causes of these tragedies, we can prevent future outbreaks and provide a better quality of life for all citizens. It is time for the government to prioritize the well-being of its people and work towards a more equitable and just society for all.
