Navigating Nigeria's Budget: From Past to Future - A Critical Examination

The good, the bad, and the ugly of Nigeria's past, present, and future budgets have been a topic of discussion for years. The question remains - have these budgets truly met the expectations of the Nigerian people? With a population of over 200 million, it is essential for the government to prioritize the basic necessities and amenities required for human development.

However, it seems that despite the numerous budgets presented to the National Assembly, the standard of living for Nigerians remains disappointingly low.

One of the key factors contributing to this issue is the devaluation of the Naira. When Nigeria gained independence, the Naira was a strong currency in the global market. However, over the years, it has significantly depreciated, leading to economic challenges for the country.

It is crucial for our leaders, both current and future, to prioritize the well-being of Nigeria above personal gain. The budget should not be seen as a national cake to be divided among a select few, but rather as a tool for national development and providing sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by Nigeria.

Lack of social amenities and essential resources only perpetuates the cycle of insecurity, hunger, poverty, and high mortality rates. Without proper investment in these areas, the country will continue to struggle with basic human needs.

Other countries have shown that it is possible to prioritize the well-being of citizens and provide for their needs. Nigeria's leaders need to follow suit and ensure that the budget is used effectively to improve the lives of the people.

Furthermore, reevaluating the allocation of funds and ensuring that resources are utilized efficiently is crucial. Recurring expenses such as re-awarding contracts year after year, instead of investing in long-term solutions, only hinders the progress of the nation.

It is time for Nigeria to rise above the challenges and strive for greatness. By prioritizing the needs of the people and investing in sustainable development, the country can work towards a brighter future for all its citizens.
